Milestones | A Journey Through 50 Monuments and Memorial Sites in Israel
Michael Jacobson | Illustrations: Itamar Magid
The Milestones book presents the story of our land through 50 memorials and commemorative sites that were established across Israel over the past one hundred years - from the beginnings of Jewish settlement in the Land of Israel, through the rebirth of the nation with the founding of the State, up to the horrific events of October 7, 2023.

The fifty sites featured in the book were selected with the aim of presenting broad historical, geographical, and cultural coverage. Each site is accompanied by an illustration, presented alongside its historical narrative, its context within the local landscape, and a discussion of the site as a work of art - including information about its creators, its artistic qualities, and the messages it conveys.
Choosing illustration as the medium aims to refresh the perspective, create a contemporary visual language for familiar sites, and present them as living and relevant works.
Many of the memorials featured in the book have become integrated into everyday life, and over the years their prominence has faded. The book returns them to center stage, inviting readers to look at them anew - with an innocent or critical eye - and to learn how they shaped the national memory and our Israeli identity.
