Pinhas Rutenberg (1879-1942) | Engineer, Zionist leader, pioneer of modern industry in Eretz Israel and founder of the Palestine Electric Company, later the Israel Electric Corporation. Born in Romny, Russia (now Ukraine). Graduated with honors in engineering studies. Due to his activity as a Russian revolutionary, he was forced to immigrate to Italy, where he began working as a hydro engineer. During WWI, Rutenberg became captivated by the Zionist idea and initiated the establishment of the Jewish Legion. In 1919, he immigrated to Israel and began planning the development of the country through power stations, along with his activity as commander in the Haganah. In 1921, he fought for and won the concession from the British to build power plants. Two years later he founded the Palestine Electric Company. Over the years, he established a number of power plants throughout the country, including the Aram Naharayim hydroelectric plant - the masterpiece of his endeavors. Rutenberg, who was called "the Old Man of Naharayim", also served as president of the Jewish National Council and established the first Hebrew airline - "Netivei Avir l‘Yisrael". Died at age 62 after a serious illness.
