Declaration of Independence - Framed Edition
On May 14, 1948, the establishment of the State of Israel was proclaimed. In one short yet powerful document, the moral, historical, and political foundations of the emerging state were set down.
Although it is commonly known as the “Scroll of Independence” (Megillat HaAtzmaut), its official title is “The Declaration of the Establishment of the State of Israel,” and it was published under this name in the official gazette on May 14, 1948.
The declaration was read aloud by David Ben-Gurion at the independence ceremony held at Beit Dizengoff in Tel Aviv on Friday, 5 Iyar 5708 (May 14, 1948), at 4:00 PM - just eight hours before the end of the British Mandate in Palestine.
A copy of the declaration is currently on display at the Knesset, while the original document is preserved in a special vault at the Israel State Archives in Jerusalem and is not exhibited to the general public.
