Rabbi Shlomo Goren (1917–1994) was a spiritual leader, fighter, halakhic authority, and the founder of the IDF Chief Military Rabbinate. A Torah prodigy from a young age, he was ordained at 17 and later studied philosophy and mathematics at the Hebrew University. Alongside his academic studies, he joined the national struggle, serving as a fighter in the Haganah and the Lehi underground. During the War of Independence, he was appointed the first Chief Military Rabbi of the IDF, a position he held for 23 years. In the Six-Day War, he was among the first to reach the Western Wall after the liberation of the Temple Mount. His shofar blasts at the site became an enduring image of victory. In 1973, he became Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of Israel, known for bold rulings that addressed modern challenges. His legacy reflects courage and groundbreaking leadership.
