Limited Edition - The Scholar, The Laborer, and The Toiler of the Soil

$139.00Price

Limited edition item, with a historical mission: The Jewish Palestine Pavilion was established at the New York World's Fair 1939 by the Jewish Yishuv in Israel, which for the first time presented the idea of a national home for the Jewish people and its enterprises in Eretz Israel to a wide audience.

Artist Maurice Ascalon (1913-2003) was commissioned to create the The Scholar, The Laborer, and The Toiler of the Soil to adorn the façade of the Pavilion and chose to illustrate what he anticipated would be three key facets of the Jewish state: education, industry and agriculture.

At the end of the fair, Ascalon’s sculpture could not be returned to Israel because of shipping restrictions during World War II which broke out during the Fair.  A sale of all of the Pavilion’s contents took place in October 1940. The sculpture was purchased for $2,500 and donated to the Spertus Institute for Jewish Learning and Leadership in Chicago.

Spertus, together with the Ascalon family and Toronto-based Zionist memorabilia collector David Matlow, are exploring opportunities for the sculpture to be displayed in Israel, completing a round trip that began in the 1930s.

The statuette is a reproduction of Ascalon's copper relief statue, and was launched in a limited edition on May 14, 2023, exactly 84 years after the pavilion's opening day at the exhibition, and 75 years after the declaration of independence of Israel. The edition includes only 250 units, of which 150 are white, and 100 are mint green as an homage to the statue's original color - patina green. All units are numbered and come with a certificate of authenticity.
