The Aliyah Bet Operation – the clandestine immigration of Jews to the Land of Israel by sea, land, and air – was one of the most significant and moving undertakings in the history of the Jewish people and the Zionist movement.
Between 1934 and 1948, there were 142 documented voyages carried out by 116 different ships, bringing more than 120,000 immigrants to the shores of the Land of Israel. These included Holocaust survivors, youth, families, and entire Jewish communities who sought to break through the British blockade and reach their homeland, despite the restrictions of the “White Paper” and the ban on Jewish immigration.
From the earliest days of Jewish life in the Diaspora, Jews sought to reach the Land of Israel by indirect and clandestine means. In the 20th century, and especially after the rise of the Nazis to power, this effort took on the dimension of mass rescue and a national mission. The immigrants embarked on their journeys with steadfast faith, knowing that the sea was their final gateway to freedom. Aliyah Bet symbolized the profound bond between the Jewish community in the Land of Israel and the Jews of the Diaspora, as well as the willingness to sacrifice. It stirred global sympathy, exposed the cruelty of the British regime, and placed the Jewish people’s right to a national homeland at the center of the international agenda.
The current edition is limited to only 142 units, in tribute to the number of immigrant ships that attempted to break the British blockade of the Land of Israel between 1934 and 1948. Each unit is crafted from concrete and mounted on an acrylic base, printed with the unique details of the specific ship and voyage it represents.
