Rachel Yanait Ben-Zvi Figurine

Rachel Yanait Ben-Zvi (1886–1979) Zionist pioneer, writer, fighter, and educator, and a leading figure in the “Hashomer” organization and the “Working Women’s Movement.” Born Golda Lishansky in Ukraine, she embraced socialism after the 1903 Kishinev pogrom and joined the Poale Zion party. In 1908, she arrived to Israel and became one of the founders at the Hebrew Gymnasium in Jerusalem. She was active in promoting Jewish self-defense, serving in the leadership of Hashomer and later helping to establish the Haganah. After studying agronomy in France, she returned and founded a women’s farm to train female pioneers and support reforestation in Jerusalem. She also helped found the Histadrut, Ahdut HaAvoda, and the Negev Committee. In 1978, she was awarded the Israel Prize for her exceptional contribution to society and the state.
